The Bajan songstress has been announced as the next recipient of the 2014 CFDA Fashion Icon Award this June 2nd at the Lincoln Center in New York City. She follows in the footsteps of past honourees Lady Gaga and supermodel Kate Moss both of whom have received the award in the past.
Currently scheduled to star in Balmain’s spring campaign, the 26 year old diva has earned her fashion chops as a fearless trendsetter. Lauded and loved by fashionistas, stylists and fashion designers, Karl Lagerfield recently flew her out to frow* at Chanel’s fashion shows in Paris and Dallas, RiRi just keeps on transcending. In the past year her stylist Mel Ottenberg and costume designer Adam Selman, have had the diva wearing an eclectic mix of couture and high street fashion making her more relatable to the buying public and sought after to front major brand campaigns and initiatives.
CFDA CEO Steven Kolb said in a statement released to the media: "We are proud to present Rihanna with the CFDA Fashion Icon Award for her impact on the industry as fashion’s most exciting ambassador in recent memory".
Speaking to Vogue in 2011, RiRi says: “When I am putting looks together, I dare myself to make something work”.“I always look for the most interesting silhouette or something that’s a little off, but I have to figure it out. I have to make it me. I think that’s the thrill in fashion.”
Pushing the fashion envelope and winning seems to come effortlessly to RiRi, and word has it that a move into reality TV music talent show is not far off. Rihanna who recently flew into London Heathrow Airport yesterday is reported to be in town for a meeting with music supremo Simon Cowell. Cowell who loves having feisty and outspoken divas on the mentoring panel believes that the Bajan star would bring a much need chutzpah to the show.
An insider at the show revealed: “Simon and Cheryl have two months to find someone to sit in that chair and they want to get the right person.” “This year is an important one for The X Factor. Simon can’t be complacent and has to come back with a real A Team." “Rihanna would be a shock selection because she is not an obvious choice for a family show – but that’s what he wants.”
This year seems to be a make or break deal for The X-Factor UK, and what Mr Cowell wants he gets. After all he managed to get Cheryl Cole back to the X-Factor. Go on RiRi sign on the dotted line, the X-Factor and British viewers need you.
